Affirmations

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are short, simple statements that should be used regularly to improve negative thinking habits. Practised daily they keep the mind focused on positive behaviour patterns and mental wellbeing. Numerous studies have shown indisputable links between having a positive outlook and improved mental and physical health, therefore by replacing any negative thoughts or phrases in your head with more positive and empowering statements, you will be retraining your brain to think in an improved way.

How do affirmations work?

The real power of affirmations lies in repeating them to yourself regularly. You can choose to say them out loud or silently in your head. It is always a good idea to have them written somewhere obvious where you can see them easily. Firstly you need to choose an affirmation that you can relate to, one that relates to your situation taking into consideration these important points.

  • The statement should begin with ‘I’ or ‘my’. (This is all about you).
  • The phrase should be set in the present tense. (It is now that you want to see changes).
  • Only positive statements are allowed.  (Ridding yourself of negativity is the key).

How do I use affirmations?

Pick one or two affirmations, write and stick them in places you see regularly. For example, on the bathroom mirror, the kitchen cupboard or even a reminder on your phone. Each time you see the affirmation, read it and believe the words. This should be done as many times as possible throughout the day. By doing this you are convincing your mind into a new way of thinking. You are reprogramming your brain.

Affirmations are also great when goal setting. Once you have identified the goals you’d like to reach, adapt positive statements to help keep yourself motivated and online to achieve the end result.   Read more about Goal-Setting here…
