Is there a link between hormones and anxiety?

Hormonal anxiety is more common than you might expect, as hormones regulate our emotions and mood significantly. The levels of oestrogen & progesterone in our bodies, rise & fall dramatically right before a menstrual cycle and they decrease dramatically when the menopause begins. During puberty, the body experiences a surge of hormones and during pregnancy, hormone levels can fluctuate on a daily basis. So it’s not the fact that your oestrogen or progesterone levels might be too low or too high, as research suggests this doesn’t lead to any emotional problems, but it is the rapid changes that cause us to feel anxious, low or experience mood swings.

The exact reason for this is still yet to be fully understood, however, we do know that oestrogen & progesterone alter the level of serotonin in the brain and as serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in regulating things such as mood, sleep, and appetite, this could be where the issue lies. Some people do seem to be more sensitive to hormone fluctuations than others, and this may possibly be due to genetics.

Understanding the connection between hormones and anxiety can really help manage the symptoms and find effective treatments. This might include;

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Exercise
  • A balanced diet
  • Good sleep habits.
