When Thoughts of Ending Your Life Appear

If you are feeling scared, confused, or overwhelmed by thoughts of not wanting to be here, you are not alone.

Triggers can include:

Although these thoughts can feel terrifying, things can improve. Many people who once felt life wasn’t worth living have gone on to live happy and fulfilling lives. If speaking out feels too hard, writing a letter, sending a text, or messaging someone you trust can be a gentler first step.

Helpful Ways to Start a Conversation

If you’re concerned about someone, you might say:

  • “Whatever you are going through, I’m here with you every step of the way.”
  • “I understand you feel trapped, but there is always a way forward, no matter how impossible it feels.”
  • “You are loved and valued, and I’m grateful you are in my life.”
  • “This moment is hard, but there are better times ahead for you.”
  • “Can I help you get the support you need?”
What to Avoid Saying

Even with the best intentions, some phrases can feel invalidating or increase guilt, such as:

  • “I know exactly how you feel.”
  • “You have nothing to worry about.”
  • “Other people have it worse.”
  • “We’d all be devastated if you…”

Instead, focus on listening without judgment, avoiding arguments, threats, or raising your voice.

If You Suspect Someone is at Risk

It’s better to act than to regret staying silent.
If you believe someone is in danger of ending their life, help them access professional support. You may need to break their confidence to keep them safe and that could save their life.

Remember, you also need to take care of your own mental well-being when supporting someone else.

You Are Not Alone

Loss through suicide affects people of all ages and walks of life. Thoughts of wanting to die are a symptom and like any other symptom, they can change with the right help. Healing is possible, and there is always hope.

Reach out. Keep talking. Stay connected.
